A Note from Dr. Edwards
Many years ago, when I was in my master’s program, one of my very wise professors said that all good counselors have a counselor. I had never been to counseling, and honestly, the thought terrified me, even though I was studying to be a counselor. I wanted to be a good counselor, so, I decided to bite the bullet and give it a try. I remember feeling a sense of apprehension and wondering if he was going to tell me that I was really screwed up and just didn’t know it. What I experienced was something completely different. Even though I had grown up in church, that counseling session felt like, in some ways, I had experienced the presence of God for the first time. I felt unconditionally accepted, understood, and believed in. I felt like I could explore the parts of me that I hated the most without any fear of judgment. I felt loved. I left the session and went to my car and cried, not because I was sad, but because I finally had a place to be real and work on becoming the best version of myself. It was such an amazing experience that I wanted to devote my life to giving that experience to other people. If you’ve never tried counseling, I encourage you find a therapist that you feel comfortable with and bite the bullet. It’s life changing.
