Family therapy focuses on working with and making changes in the family system. Family therapy can be done with one generation or multiple generations. Sometimes all members of the family are involved in therapy and sometimes only a few. The goal of family therapy is to help family members remove obstacles and change patterns of behavior, that can be multi-generational, that have interfered with family functioning and relationships.
Common issues addressed in family therapy include parenting problems, communication, conflict resolution, blended family concerns, family transitions, relational boundaries, divorce adjustment, and crisis management.
